Schools against bid for new liquor store in Lincoln By Georgia O’Connor-Harding LINCOLN SCHOOLS are standing up against plans for a new liquor store, saying they are worried about the message it will send to students. An application has been made to open a new shop – the Lincoln Bottle Store – at 12A Gerald St, which is 96m away from Super Liquor. The opportunity to make an objection closes tomorrow, and a hearing date is yet to be set by the district licensing committee. The application has been opposed by Lincoln High School. Principal Kathy Paterson said there was already another liquor outlet close by and it was sending a poor message to students regarding drugs and alcohol. “It is just its location – if it

was somewhere else in Lincoln, where it wasn’t so central to where the students are, it wouldn’t pose such a problem,” she said. Lincoln Primary School and Lincoln University both told Selwyn Times they were aware of the application and were considering a response. Lincoln Primary School previously objected to Super Liquor, and for the first four years of its establishment, the store was required to be closed during the hours its pupils were travelling home from school. Principal Vivienne Butcher said another liquor store was absolutely unnecessary. “It does seem to me to be an oversupply of liquor outlets in one small frontage,” she said. •Turn to page 6

New bars are being built and we reveal today (page 1) there is an application for a new off licence bottle store in Gerald St. Off-licence bottle store applications tend to attract opposition and it’s no different in this case. The two local schools are against it. But there’s a very good reason another off-licence wants to go into Lincoln – the university students. And that’s what I mean by demand. The New World supermarket and Super Liquor dominate the off-licence market at the moment but obviously the new applicant believes there is room for more business. That will mean competition, and competition is good. There will be a lot of pressure to retain business. The winner? – the customer. – Barry Clarke

Described as a “little madam,” Gemma the cairn terrier loves her daily walks and hates to be left at home. So when she was diagnosed with a serious illness, her owner Sue Smit came up with a cunning plan to make sure her dog could still get outdoors. Each morning you will find Gemma out travelling firstclass in a pram on Goulds Rd, near the roundabout of Clearview Primary School. Mrs Smit came up with the idea after a friend of hers bought a proper dog stroller after an operation on its ligaments. Earlier this year the 10-year-old was diagnosed with immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, causing her immune system to start attacking her red blood cells. Mrs Smit said the disease causes her to tire easily mak-

ing it difficult for her to walk far. But she said Gemma will push through whatever happens to her. Mrs Smit was first made aware of Gemma’s condition when the dog fainted while running around at the Foster Park Dog Exercise Area. While there is no cure to the illness, Gemma is on medication. The little dog has united canine-fans on Facebook’s Rolleston Community Page with nearly 500 responses to

an image of her posted online and several comments wishing her a fast recovery. “She is a very cute little dog. Everyone who meets her absolutely loves her,” Mrs Smit said. Mrs Smit said Gemma used to love running up to her favourite people at the dog park. Since Gemma’s image was posted on Facebook, Mrs Smit said she is regularly approached by residents asking how she is doing.

Cost savings expected Comedy night with new street lights tickets selling fast

The district council will replace its stock of about 5800 street lights with LED technology as part of a threeyear renewal programme. The New Zealand Murray Lemon Transport Agency recently approved a funding business case for the district council to replace its lights. The business case found the cost of the renewal programme of $3.3 million would have a payback period of four to six years based on the energy cost savings of the LED lighting. NZTA has recently increased its funding assistance rate from 49 per cent, to 85 per cent for LED street lighting associated with roads. It is available until the next financial year.

Water quality into lake set to improve By Georgia O’Connor-Harding NEW MEASURES have been put in place in a bid to monitor the water quality going into Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora. A resource consent has been lodged by the Osbornes catchment management working party to restrict the type of discharge running from Osbornes Drain into the lake. The Osbornes drainage scheme is a network of about 9km of drains operating over 1620 ha of farmland and discharges into the lake by a pump station. A meeting over the Sam Broughton resource consent to revive the drain was held between the Osbornes catchment management working party earlier this month. District council water asset manager Murray England said it was a significant milestone for the party, who have been working to get a consent for the last three years. The party is made up of repre-

sentatives from ECan, Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu, Te Taumutu Runanga, Wairewa Runanga, Department of Conservation, district council and the Osbornes drainage committee. The aim of the consent is to improve its water quality and ecosystem health and avoid erosion and sediment damage of the drain.

Mayor Sam Broughton said the consent looks at measures to make sure things are not going into the lake that shouldn’t be. The consent aims to improve water quality and ecosystem health, avoid erosion and sediment discharge, reduce adverse effects of flooding and facilitate sustainable farming practice. It will also be limited to water

generated by the construction and maintenance of the Osbornes Land Drainage network. A report prepared for the district council by environmental consultant Pattle Delamore Partners Ltd found water quality sampling of the Osbornes Drain indicated high nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations. Environment Canterbury’s

Water Quality Index characterised the water quality in the drain as poor. The report said historical activities such as unmanaged land uses, such as direct discharge of dairy effluent and stock access into the drain is likely to have contributed to the build up of contaminants in sediment. Plans discussed in the report include removing all sediment for the entire length of the Osbornes Drain. Before the 1940s it was estimated Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora had about 800 tonnes reaching it per year. Since then, the nitrogen load has increased, accompanied by a deterioration in water quality. Mural back in station foyer at Arthur’s Pass By Georgia O’ConnorHarding ARTHUR’S PASS railway station’s colourful mural has been restored to its former glory. More than two years ago, the station’s historic waiting room mural was taken down while the station was re-painted and repaired. Arthur’s Pass Community Centre Pete chairman Pete Neale Neale said the restoration comes after at last two years of emails and phone calls with KiwiRail. The mural was first installed when the station opened in 1966 after the previous station burnt down in 1963. In 2015, the station under went a makeover involving the removal of asbestos and the relining of the entire building on the inside. Mr Neale said while the mural should have been re-installed, this did not

He said after finally managing to contact an employee of KiwiRail’s resource services department, permission to have the mural re-installed was given. “In between all this, the mural went missing from the back room at the station. Thankfully, some fine late night detective work found it stored in a container near the station,” Mr Neale said. The cost of re-installing

the mural was supported by Rail Heritage Trust New Zealand and KiwiRail, while residents helped put it up. Meanwhile, an artist has been commissioned to paint a mural on the wall of the subway tunnel leading from State Highway 73 to the station. The project, supported by the Rata Foundation and Resene Paints, is expected to cost $12,000 and will start at the end of October.

Your Local Views Raising awareness of amazing eels Rolleston Christian School pupil Charlie Johnston writes about the need to protect eels in Selwyn THEY’RE SLIMY, snake-like and kind of ugly. Eels in New Zealand are in trouble, particularly in the Canterbury and Selwyn area. I would like to raise the awareness of these eels so they are still here for many, many years, and so that our waterways stay safe for them. The short-finned eel and the long-finned eel both live in Canterbury waterways including the Selwyn, Waimakariri, Rakaia, Avon, Heathcote, and Kaiapoi Rivers, and Lake Ellesmere. Both eels are also native to New Zealand. New Zealand eels are declining. Things such as over-fishing, bad water quality, pollution, river diversions and drought are just a few problems facing eels in Canterbury and New Zealand, especially the Selwyn River and Ashley River. Eels are really amazing fish, they may not be the most beautiful creatures, but they are extraordinary.

They are able to stay alive out of water for three days in a moist environment. Long-finned eels travel 2382km

to Pacific islands such as Tonga where they spawn and die. Eels can live up to 100-yearsold, sometimes more, and long

finned eels can grow to 2m. Two metre eels are usually females and are also extremely rare. Some people in New Zealand are trying to help save our eels by rescuing them, protesting or even creating petitions. Bay of Plenty’s Bill Kerrison helps younger eels. As the elvers (young eels) make their way upstream, they are stopped by hydro dams. Mr Kerrison spends about six months trapping and relocating the younger eels further upstream, where they will spend more than 50 years before returning to the sea Over three months (starting in autumn) Mr Kerrison spends his time catching mature breeding eels and taking them to the other side of the dam where he releases them to carry on their journey to breed. In 2013, 6766 people signed a petition to save the long-finned eel from extinction, but not much has happened since. Another reason for saving eels is that they’re special to Maori – “an ancient gift from the gods.” Tuna (eels) are of great significance to Maori culturally and eels are a significant food source

for Maori. There are more than 100 different tribal names for eels. Maoris caught eels using Hinaki (eel pots), Pa-tuna (eel weirs), mata rau (spearing) and many more interesting methods. Some are still used today around Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora and surrounding rivers. If you would like to help save the eels you can: •Be careful what you dispose of in your drainage and stormwater systems •Pick up rubbish at local rivers and lakes •Remove invasive weeds from rivers and lakes •You can also let them go when you catch them (especially big females) •Befriend the eels (learn from them you’ll find that they’re worth saving) •If you are going to catch and kill eels, then only keep what you need (don’t take too much).

I READ with interest the recent article in the Selwyn Times from Mr Allen, on behalf of Federated Farmers, commenting on the Green Party’s plan to charge a 10 cent a litre tax on bottled water sales. It seems the general public are getting rightfully concerned about the giving away of billions of litres of free water to largely overseas owned/controlled corporations, who are then able to make windfall profits from sales of NZ bottled water. One example being the Coca Cola Corporation selling a 750ml litre bottle of pure NZ water for $3.50. Even allowing for retail and distributor markups that a horrendous profit for a product that is given to them largely for nothing. It also seems that Federated Farmers lobby groups are also getting nervous about the growing public awareness around water issues, including the massive amount of well water required to produce a litre of milk. A reasoned rational debate around this important issue is a positive step forward, but lets have it without the scaremongering comments attributed to Mr Allen.

Your Local Views Readers respond to speed limit consultation about to get under way by the district council Bob Stewart – I would like to say that with the exception of the main arterial roads such as Springs Rd and Shands Rd, most rural roads in the Selwyn district should be reduced to 80km/h. I am constantly amazed at the number of rural roads that are narrow, undulating and winding that are totally unsafe at 100km/h. I look forward to a common sense change to lower speed limits for roads that are not engineered and built to the same standard as our main route roads such as state highways. Thomas Maxwell – I am a local resident in Springston. I feel that more speed limit signs need to be put up for motorists to see as they enter and leave the Springston township area. Many neighbours share my feeling that vehicles drive far too fast through the township. I live on the eastern end of Springston, where the speed limit changes from 100km/h down 50km/h.

ISSUE: Vehicle speed in Springston has a resident concerned.

However, the transition distance for the average motorist to reduce vehicle speed from 100km/h down to 50km/h is not enough, and most vehicles (cars, vans or trucks) are entering the Springston township area (a 50km/h speed zone) doing between 90-70km/h. My house is the first house you pass as you come into Springston, and we constantly hear throughout the day fast travelling cars entering and leaving the township. Part of the issue is that the opposite end of the township does actually have a 100 to 70 to 50km/h transition zone, but our end of the township does not, which is by far the busier end of Springston, with its proximity to the Leeston Rd and Ellesmere Junction Rd “T-junction”. This junction is busy in the mornings and evenings, with commuters making

there way to and from work. Fellow Selwyn residents living beyond Springston who utilise the Leeston Rd-Ellesmere Junction Rd junction, will turn onto Ellesmere Junction Rd heading towards Lincoln or Hornby and will begin to speed up towards 100km/h because they see the end of the limited speed zone road sign ahead, but not a 50km/h sign. Overall road and pedestrian safety and the Springston residents general feeling of comfort and security is the primary concern I am raising here. I understand that the local neighbourhood watch group has asked the district council to do something about the issue of motorists speeding through Springston in the past, but no action has been taken yet.

Clearview pupils create mural to adorn school’s entranceway CLEARVIEW Primary pupils have created the school’s first mural. The mural features the house groups, including earth, air, water and fire, along with the Waimakariri River and Tane Mahuta, the school’s symbolic eye displayed in the middle. Teacher Adele Allport said the copper circles on the right of the mural have the school’s values imprinted on them – collaborate, climb, connect, care, create and curious. The mural was designed and painted by 130 pupils ranging from year 1 through to year 8. A small design team first started working on the mural with Mrs Allport about 12 months ago. The mural is 3.6m x 2.4m long and is on display at the front of the school. Mrs Allport said the school’s property manager Ricky Hoffmeister also played a large role in the construction of the mural’s 3D elements. The mural was created using a range of materials including rope, copper and steel. Mrs Allport said plans are already in the pipeline for the school’s next mural, which will also go on display at the entrance of the school.

A PLAYCENTRE is once again a busy hub for families in the Tai Tapu area. The centre now has 15 to 20 families attending at its new building on Old Tai Tapu Rd. The Tai Tapu Playcentre opened at the beginning of term three after its old building sustained damaged in the September 4, 2010, and February 22, 2011, earthquakes. In spite of the old playcentre building needing demolition, it was not closed until last November. While the new building was built, it used the Prebbleton Playcentre and had shared sessions with the Lincoln Playcentre. President Alice Scoulding said many families have joined the new centre recently after seeing

Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. is considered a pest due to the significant damage it can cause to fruit, flowers and vegetable crops. However, this earwig can also be a beneficial biocontrol species of small insect pests including a

number of aphid and scale insect species. In late autumn, both male and female earwigs burrow in soil to overwinter. The female lays a clutch of 50-80 eggs that she cares for by cleaning and rotating to avoid fungal growth. Once hatched, females will guard their young for about one month, when they have reached maturity.

By Gordon Findlater THE resurfacing of Southbridge Tennis Club’s four 30-year-old asphalt courts will begin on Thursday after six years of lobbying the district council. The courts, which are owned by the club but open to the public, will be closed from Thursday and are expected to re-open in three weeks. Former club president Phil Carter has been in charge of the effort to get the courts resurfaced and was delighted to get the news from the district council recently that it will make a healthy contribution to the resurfacing of the courts. While Carter could not comment on the district council’s exact contribution, he said the cost of the resurfacing the courts could have crippled the club.

They were badly damaged and in need of a resurfacing following the earthquakes. Until now, the club’s expenses have been paid for by members and fundraising.

“Now that we’ve got the go ahead we can start focussing on promoting tennis,” said Carter. The club plans to host an opening day once the work is complete, which will double as a

chance for potential new members to come and enjoy a sausage sizzle. It currently has just under 50 members and hosts mid-week members’ nights and coaching,

The Selwyn Heritage Fund will open on Monday 11 September for the 2017 funding round.

A total of $40,000 is available to support projects by owners of heritage buildings or protected trees. The fund will cover part of the cost of a project, which may include restoring, reinforcing and protecting heritage buildings, trees or other structures that have historical or cultural importance. Applicants will need to fund some of the cost from other sources. In 2016 the Selwyn Heritage Fund assisted 15 projects across the district, including the bell tower refurbishment of St George's Anglican Church, Kirwee, Tai Tapu School heritage oak tree pruning, the relocation of Mary's Cottage in Southbridge, and the reconstruction of the brick fence at St John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Leeston. Priority is given to items listed in the Selwyn District Plan. Funding cannot be used for routine maintenance, or for improvements which are of personal or commercial benefit. Applicants need to include at least two quotes from suitably qualified tradespeople for the cost of the work involved. Applications close on Friday 20 October 2017. Ltd are temporarily shutting off the Upper Ellesmere water race intake and scheme to allow for intake maintenance. The intake will be closed from 11–15 September. The proposed changes include extending 50 and 70 km/hr zones on the outskirts of several townships, and extending or introducing 80 km/hr limits on some rural roads in eastern Selwyn. The proposals follow a Council review of speed limits across the district, and include changes requested by residents and local community committees. Crash data is also used to help identify areas where reduced limits may be needed. Townships where lower speed limits are proposed to be extended include Castle Hill, Leeston, Lincoln, Prebbleton, Rolleston, the Rolleston industrial area, and West Melton. An 80 km/hr limit is proposed on rural roads adjoining the Christchurch city boundary, including Maddisons Road and extending out to Tai Tapu, Lincoln and Rolleston. The existing 80 km/hr speed limit on rural roads in the Prebbleton area would also be extended out to Lincoln and Rolleston. Selwyn District Council Assets Manager Murray Washington says the proposal reflects the growth of many Selwyn townships. “Selwyn’s population is continuing to grow steadily, bringing with it new subdivisions and higher volumes of traffic,” he says. “Commercial and industrial activity is also increasing, with more heavy vehicles on our roads. “It’s appropriate that we review the speed limits from time to time, to make sure our roading network is safe for all users, that speed limits are appropriate for the conditions, and that we encourage safe driving.” The Council plans to approve the new limits before the end of the year. Spending up as Selwyn economy grows Latest economic data shows Selwyn’s economy is continuing to grow – with retail and tourism spending growth outstripping regional and national averages during the year to June 2017. The June quarterly economic monitor from analysts Infometrics shows retail sales increased by 7% on the same quarter last year, compared to 3.6% for New Zealand, and 1.5% for the Canterbury region. Spending was also up in the tourism sector, with the visitor spend for the year rising from $89 million in 2016 to $95 million in 2017 – a 7% increase. During the same period the New Zealand average rose by 5.9%, while the Canterbury region increased by 3.5%. Unemployment in Selwyn averaged 2.3% for the year, slightly up from 2% a year earlier but below the New Zealand average of 5% and the Canterbury region at 3.9%.

New exhibition evokes imagination The newest exhibition at Darfield’s Selwyn Gallery, ‘Surrealists – What Dreams May Come’, features a wonderful mix of whimsical. Their intricate details evoke wonder and imagination, making this ‘different’ exhibition not to be missed. The exhibitors are talented artists, Jinx, Dave Pearson, and John Burns.

Jinx in the Sky Originally from Austria, Jinx in the Sky moved to New Zealand in 2006. She finds inspiration in dreams, emotions, and song lyrics. Sometimes even small things such as sunlight passing through coloured glass or just a striking colour combination can trigger ideas for new paintings. “This series of paintings is inspired by my love for botanic gardens and Victorian glasshouses. The glasshouse in my paintings serves as a little retreat. A place to relax… safe oasis to daydream in…a fortress of inner peace and light. back as his early primary school days. His favourite things to draw at the time were tanks, skeletons, and dungeons. After many years of scratching around with biro and paper, he searched for a suitable medium to finally take his ideas and rough drawings through to finished work. In 2010 Dave signed up to do a digital concept design workshop in Wellington, and was hooked. Fantasy art and design in the movie industry have been his major influences. Dave’s goal is to develop his painting technique and style, and do commissioned work for book and album covers. John Burns John and his wife live in the village of Otira, which he describes as “a place of dynamic weather, high mountains, rivers and waterfalls, native birds and animals, all the simple things we love most”. “I have been an artist for a very long time, sold works through galleries and our own gallery here in Otira. My art is in a state of constant evolution. Some have stories, some are crazy, gentle, mad, kind, thoughtful, different, and that’s a word I hear a lot about my art, and a word I like... to be different.” John is proud to say he has never been

to art school. He began painting portraits, but now is only interested in painting contemporary art, including modernist illustrations of people, including Maori women. John’s wife, Di Gordon-Burns, has written a collection of children’s books, which Burns plans to illustrate: “I’ve done the cover and it’s like no other children’s book.” ‘Surrealists – What Dreams May Come’ runs from September 1-25, 2017. Second speed indicator to be installed

Following the installation of a first road speed indicator at Weedons Ross Road in West Melton by the Selwyn District Council, residents were keen to see a second one installed. They were concerned that the growth in the town’s population was seeing increased driving speed in the district, and around the local school. The West Melton Residents’ Association carried out a survey to determine where people wanted the second one to be installed, and the preferred location was the eastern approach on SH73. Selwyn District Council Road Engineer Mark Chamberlain said the road speed indicator should be installed during September. “The indicator has been ordered, but it has not been delivered yet,” Mr Chamberlain said. “It will be installed on SH73 initially, but it can be moved to other locations. The western approach to West Melton is the second preferred site.”

Installation of the indicator requires a ground socket to be installed at each site with the device and pole placed in the socket, Mr Chamberlain said. “The cost for the speed indicator is about $8000 supplied and installed, which is the same as the other speed indicator devices in the district,” he said. Chairman of the West Melton Residents Association, Jeff Waters, said the association had some discretionary funding available, which was being used for this purpose. The Selwyn District Council has speed indication devices installed throughout the district, Mr Chamberlain said. “Anecdotally and from observation, we have found that traffic slows down to close to or below the speed limit when the ‘SLOW DOWN’ message is displayed. “Once the speed limit is reached, the actual speed of the vehicle is then displayed.”

M.bovis finds not a surprise to Feds Federated Farmers (Feds) was disappointed, but not surprised, to learn of three new finds of stock with Mycoplasma bovis. The affected properties confirmed by the Ministry for Primary Industries last week are all linked to Van Leeuwen Group farms where the cattle disease was first identified last month. “This latest identification is obviously disappointing but it was anticipated as the animals were traced back to the origin of the initial outbreak,” Federated Farmers biosecurity spokesperson Guy Wigley said. “It’s important to keep things in perspective and not unnecessarily increase anxiety levels amongst farmers. The reality is it exists in most countries and they manage it just fine with trade unaffected. “We know the frustration out there, but this is a complex bacterial infection which we have never encountered before here in New Zealand.” Mr Wigley said MPI was throwing significant resources at containing the disease and was remaining positive that it could be eradicated. “From what I understand, testing is rigorous, with the MPI animal health

laboratory expecting to test more than 39,000 samples in an extensive surveillance programme over the next three months.” Feds is supporting MPI’s efforts to communicate with farmers, providing information via fact sheets, websites and public meetings. “Affected farmers are being informed on a regular basis about sample results. The fact is, it’s going to take several months to ascertain a definitive result,” Mr Wigley said. Feds has heard talk among farmers who are concerned about MPI’s inability to identify affected properties, because of the Privacy Act. “Apart from the obligations under the law, this is not the time to incriminate other farmers who may be in a stressful state,” Mr Wigley said. “MPI is doing what it is obligated to do, and that is to acknowledge the privacy rights of those farmers who have bovis identified in their herds. It’s not a question of secrecy – it’s about protecting individual farmers and their businesses from unwelcome and unhelpful publicity.” Farmers are advised to stay vigilant and report immediately to their vet any signs in

their cattle of mastitis that doesn’t respond to treatment, pneumonia, arthritis and lateterm abortions. “We all need to stay together if we are to tackle this nasty cattle disease. That way, we have a chance to eliminate it. “The industry as a whole is working with

Event marks first steps in building joint facility The facility, scheduled for practical completion in 2020, will accommodate 700 scientists and students who will work and learn in a new, shared environment, to produce innovations for New Zealand’s primary industries and help grow the New Zealand economy. The start of work on a world-class $206 million joint facility to house AgResearch and Lincoln University researchers, students and staff is being viewed as an important step forward for agriculture, science and education in New Zealand. The facility, scheduled for practical completion in 2020, will accommodate 700 scientists and students who will work and learn in a new, shared environment, to produce innovations for New Zealand’s primary industries and help grow the New Zealand economy. The facility will be jointly owned by AgResearch and the university and DairyNZ will be a tenant. Leaders from AgResearch and Lincoln University were joined by Minister of Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment, and Minister for Science and Innovation, Paul Goldsmith in marking the early work being underway on the site of the new facility on August 22. Speaking at the event, AgResearch chief executive Tom Richardson said: “There’s been a lot of work done to get to this point of having a spade in the ground, and the site now being prepared for the 27,000 square metre building. “It’s now very much a reality, and I think there is a real sense of anticipation that we are going to have a facility that is something quite special, and that the new way of working together is going to make a real difference where it comes to the results we produce to support the land-based industries.” Lincoln University Chancellor Steve Smith called it a historic day. “Lincoln’s future in the national tertiary system and its national and international standing will be defined by what happens within the walls of these buildings that will become the first physical home for the Lincoln Hub.

“The opportunity for Lincoln University – one which we intend to seize – is to unleash the potential inherent in having our teachers and students working alongside and partnering with the leadingedge scientists from AgResearch, other CRIs and industry. “The real power in learning and research comes from proximity: human relationships, being in the same space, chance conversations and the synergies observed between different academic and scientific disciplines,” Mr Smith said. Minister Goldsmith was also joined by representatives from Lincoln University and AgResearch at the event in signing a scroll to be placed in a time capsule, which will eventually be incorporated into the site. Selwyn MP Amy Adams and Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton also attended the event.

GET PLANTING: Prepare the flower beds for summer colour and get in plants that transcend the seasons.

Spring is a busy season IT’S TIME for gardeners to celebrate. Temperatures are on the rise, producing signs of spring throughout the garden. September can be a wet and windy month so ensure you still protect plants where need be. It’s a busy but very enjoyable time, with colour and scents slowly coming back into the garden. Final harvesting and

removal of winter maturing vegetables gives plenty of material for the compost bin. By staggering planting times, hopefully these vegetables have supplied you with continuous supplies over winter. Where conditions allow, ie soil not too wet and temperatures rising in your area, you can plant the hardier vegetables for summer harvesting. Remember the more traditional summer vegetables will be planted next month. Those veges can include; asparagus, beetroot, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, onion, radish, silverbeet and spinach. Improve existing vege plots with plenty of compost before planting the new seasons vegetables. Keep a wary eye for slugs and snails as they emerge when temperatures increase. Time for preparing your summer flowering garden. Winter annuals are now coming to an end of their flowering. While it’s still a little early for planting traditional summer annuals, there are some that ‘transcend’ the typical growing seasons and are very useful

shovels! With the sun making an appearance for longer through the day, we definitely get the feeling that the spring weather is almost here. With this being said, we can still get some late frosts and nasty weather through the beginning of September, so hold onto your shovels and refrain from planting seedlings just yet. There are still plenty of things you can do before you plant out. Preparing your soil is very important. If you want to grow good veggies, you need to put them in good growing mix. For existing gardens that need a boost, add in our Organic Compost. If you are establishing a new garden, look to our Garden Soil Mix, or Veggie Garden Mix, depending on what you are planting. Stone fruit such as apricots, cherries, nectarines, peaches and plums are all in bloom now, as are pip fruit such as apples and pears. Hopefully, weather conditions allow for pollination by bees. Last year’s heavy rainfall had a major impact on pollination. Rose growth is finally under way. Spring/early summer is the best time for roses with masses of blooms and plants usually disease free. The addition of compost around the base of existing plants is beneficial for plant health. Start feeding roses from October onwards with fertiliser. Cut lawns regularly in early spring, avoiding close mowing initially. First lawn fertiliser can be applied in late September/early October.

Keeping safe during open homes There’s a lot to consider when putting your home on show during the selling process. While you want your property to look attractive to potential buyers, you don’t want them to advertise your precious belongings to anyone with ill intent. As in most circumstances, a bit of common sense goes a long way. To start with, you should feel completely confident about your real estate agent. Licensed real estate agents are bound by the Code of Conduct, which means they have a clear responsibility to safeguard your property. If you have any concerns about holding open homes, or having viewings of your property, it’s important to discuss these with the agent so you can both feel comfortable. They can advise you on any precautions to take as part of preparing the property for sale. When you’re getting ready to put the property on the market, the New Zealand Police National Crime Prevention Centre recommends checking with your insurance provider so you know what your policy covers. Make sure you have enough insurance to cover any potential

property damage, or any valuables. Let trusted neighbours know the dates of any upcoming open homes or viewings, and ask them to keep an eye out for anything unusual. The Police also suggest that you store any valuables well out of sight before you hold your first open home, or make the property available for viewing. The most commonly stolen items include money, jewellery, office equipment, clothing, electronics, and firearms. Photograph and record serial numbers (these can also be uploaded to the SNAP website: www.snap.org.nz). It can be helpful to make a checklist to streamline the process and ensure you don’t overlook anything. It’s a good idea to hide your calendars – open home viewers don’t need to know when you plan to be away, or where you’re planning to go. Put away family photos, and lock away any passports, spare keys, financial statements and credit cards. Store any alcohol and prescription drugs out of sight and preferably out of the reach of children.

Kitchen Pantries Many people enjoy having one as it offers more accessible storage and a place out of the way to prepare food, hide the mess and even do the washing up.

A standard in many homes, pantries disappeared out of kitchens for a time. More recently, they have made a comeback and are now almost a standard fixture in new house designs. The options for pantries range from large corner units produced by a kitchen manufacturer to walk-in pantries that are a room within the home, usually located behind or at one end of a kitchen. A walk-in pantry is a room that is of sufficient size for a person to comfortably walk around. Also known as a larder, a pantry’s main purpose is storage for food, beverages and cooking condiments. Crockery, linen and even household cleaning products, which were traditionally stored in a butler’s pantry may now be kept there. In the United States, the pantry might also be a small entryway with an exterior door. Butler’s or serving pantries were historically located between the kitchen and dining room in middle class homes. Today, a butler’s pantry may have benches, sinks and kitchen appliances such as dishwasher and refrigerator. While storage is the main purpose of a pantry, a scullery was a place for food preparation and washing dishes, pots and other items. It may have doubled as a laundry in some houses. With open plan living, there has been a shift from the kitchen as the main work area towards pantries being mini-kitchens with a sink and kitchen appliances. A walk-in or butler’s pantry offers a number of advantages: • an out-of-the-way place to prep and hide the mess from food preparation, dirty dishes or other items. • a place to store those accumulated kitchen appliances. • it can be permanently set up for breakfast with toaster, jug and tray of spreads at the ready. • saves the kitchen island for family gathering, eating and reading.

• allows the kitchen to become a social gathering area. • converts the kitchen from a workroom into a living area with book shelves, seating areas and a more decorative layout. • can save on cabinetry if only shelving is installed in the pantry with less in the kitchen. • locating the dishwasher there can cut noise in the living area. The negatives of a pantry include: • higher building costs as it increases the square metres as well as another wall, door and potentially more shelving, cupboards and sinks. • it is another area to clean. • the room could be dark if no window. • if preparation is carried out in the pantry, the person is shut away from the family. While the major drawback of including a pantry is the added building costs, many people enjoy having one as it offers more accessible storage and a place out of the way to prepare food, hide the mess and even do the washing up.

Kitchens are less a workroom and more a living space.

Pantries without a window can be dark.

Pantries with only shelving can save on cabinetry.
